ABILENE, Texas — A Marine Corps veteran with no known next-of-kin has died and the Texas Veterans Land Board wants to make sure he is not laid to rest alone in the Big Country.

Bob Gilbert Wood was born Oct. 2, 1941. He served as a USMC Private First Class from June 1960 to January 1965 and received the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal for his service.

At 11 a.m. (sharp) Monday, July 29, the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene will conduct an unaccompanied veteran burial for Wood.

He is not expected to have any next-of-kin attend his burial, so the TVLB is asking the public to help spread the word and ensure this U.S. Marine Corps veteran is not buried alone. Members of the Abilene community are encouraged to attend.

PFC Wood will receive military honors and if no next-of-kin is present at his burial, a Veterans Land Board representative will accept the United States flag on his behalf.

The Texas Veterans Land Board works with the local communities and fellow veterans service organizations to ensure no veteran is left alone.
