ABILENE, Texas — UPDATE (July 4): The City of Abilene says concrete pouring continues for the Cypress Street Improvement Project at 5 a.m. Friday, July 5, for the south end of Phase 1. Residents should expect heavy traffic movement and the sound of concrete trucks.

ORIGINAL STORY: If you live in the area of downtown Abilene, expect to hear the sounds of construction work happening Wednesday and Thursday mornings as part of the Cypress Street Improvement Project is being completed.

The City of Abilene says beginning at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, crews will begin pouring concrete on the north end of the project's Phase 1. Residents should expect heavy traffic movement and the sound of concrete trucks early on those days.

The project was designed to prioritize pedestrian safety and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of Cypress Street and downtown Abilene, with a focus on beautification and functionality. The strategic investment is a cornerstone for Abilene's economic development efforts to attract and retain a skilled workforce by fostering a dynamic and attractive city center, the City says.

Key features of the project include the conversion of Cypress Street's traffic pattern from a two-lane one-way street to a two-lane two-way street, aimed at improving traffic flow and accessibility. Sidewalks will be widened to 20 feet, ensuring ample room for pedestrians to walk comfortably and safely.

Certain portions of Cypress will be closed during phases of the project. Vehicular traffic will be affected, but sidewalks will be open for pedestrians and some alleyways will be available for deliveries and utility and vehicle access to closed areas.

One portion of the project is completed, changing cross-street traffic to four-way stops at the intersections of North 2nd, North 3rd, North 4th, and North 5th streets. The remaining work is anticipated to be completed in approximately 18 months.
