ABILENE, Texas — While the Scurry County judge has declared a disaster and asked the state for help recovering from 61 earthquakes recorded in the area in seven days, nearby cities are closely monitoring the situation.

The City of Abilene said its Department of Emergency Management is actively monitoring the series of earthquakes along the Scurry and Fisher county lines that have been felt across the Big Country and as far away as Dallas and Austin.

"While it is too early to determine the exact cause of these earthquakes, it is important to note that earthquakes in this region of Texas are often associated with man-made activities," the City said in a news release. "At this time, there is no indication that this series of earthquakes will significantly impact the Abilene area."

"We understand that experiencing an earthquake can be unsettling and encourage residents to educate themselves on earthquake preparedness and safety."

Information on preparedness can be found at ready.gov.

Big Country residents who experience an earthquake are encouraged to report their experiences to the U.S. Geological Survey at earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/tellus.

The City said it will provide updates as warranted.
