ABILENE, Texas — Abilene residents now have a new Community Recycling Unit at the local Sam's Club, 5550 S. Clack St., the retailer announced Friday.

The unit provides residents a free recycling solution for various items, including some that may not be accepted by local curbside programs. Accepted waste streams include aluminum, clear plastic containers, home cleaning and beauty bottles, plastic bags and films and rigid plastic food packaging.

You don't have to be a Sam's Club member to use the recycling unit.

Here’s how it works:

  • Verify what items are accepted here.
  • Collect and sort acceptable recyclable items, ensuring all liquid, food and other contaminants are removed before dropping them off
  • Drop off recyclable items at the Community Recycling Unit, which are clearly marked and accessible to customers in the store parking lot
  • Instructions are provided on the Community Recycling Unit, including which items need to be deposited in each bin

Within the last year, both Walmart and Sam’s Club have rolled out 43 Community Recycling Units in store and club parking lots in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. In its infancy, the program has already collected 155 thousand pounds of materials.
