ABILENE, Texas — For the past two years now, Hardin-Simmons University has been working on the construction of Abilene Hall.
This three-floor building will be home to the university's new engineering school and a dedication ceremony will take place 11 a.m. Aug. 29.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. and United States Representative Jodey Arrington will both be in attendance to give their personal remarks for the new building, providing 2,200 square feet of space indoors.
Floor one will offer lab spaces, floor two will include lecture halls, a computer lab, lounge and data canter while floor three will be home to the university's nursing program in 2025 once construction is completed.
Historically, Abilene Hall originally opened in 1913 but caught fire in 1947, causing major destruction.
A year later, the hall was rebuilt and used as a hub for core classes.
The new building lasted until 2021, when broken pipes caused flooding, a broken boiler and electrical issues following a winter storm.
Now, the construction of the new building is finally complete, welcoming students once more.
