ABILENE, Texas — It's time for Gilbert the Goose's birthday party with all sorts of things to celebrate including a fireworks show!
Hardin-Simmons University is hosting its yearly birthday celebration for its unofficial mascot, Gilbert the Goose, beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26, on the campus intramural fields. Games, food and other merriment will be followed by a fireworks show to close out the night.
The university said the start time for the fireworks is 10 p.m. and the show will last approximately 15 minutes.
According to university lore, Gilbert, the white goose, arrived on campus in spring 2013. He’s named after Gilbert Sandefer, son of former HSU President, Jefferson Davis Sandefer. As the unofficial mascot of HSU and adopted family member, he gets lots of attention from students and a birthday bash every year.
Anyone living in the surrounding neighborhoods should be prepared to hear or see fireworks around the HSU campus Friday night. If you live in the immediate area, take the necessary precautions to keep your pets and family safe, the school said.
