Black artists featured in new Grace Museum exhibits

ABILENE, Texas — Black Texas artists will be the focus of one museum's new exhibits. 

From now through Feb. 3, 2024, the Grace Museum in Abilene will feature Witness: Black Artists in Texas, Then and Now and As I See It: Earlie Hudnall, Jr. in its new autumn exhibition. 

The former will highlight Black culture and the rejection of stereotypes from the perspective of 18 artists including John Biggers, Charles Criner, Geraldine Crossland, Spencer Evans, Johnny Floyd, Karl E. Hall, Riley Holloway, Letitia Huckaby, Sedrick Huckaby, Harvey Johnson, Earl S. Jones, Earlie Hudnall, Jr., Bert Long, Jr., Delita Martin, Kermit Oliver, Elizabeth Montgomery Shelton, Carroll Harris Simms, and Roy Vinson Thomas.

A gallery preview will be open to the public 5 p.m. Oct. 27 followed by curator comments and artist introductions at 6 p.m. 

The latter showcase will feature the works of photographer Earlier Hudnall, Jr., who began his career with Lyndon B. Johnson's Model Cities Program. 

Hudnall, Jr. was popularized for his photos capturing Houston Wards and everyday Black life. There will be a gallery preview and public reception 5 p.m. Nov. 30 followed by an artist talk, titled, "There's Nothing Like Your Own Backyard," at 6 p.m. 

The museum is located at 102 Cypress St.
