ABILENE, Texas — The holidays are a time not only for family and friends, but also for community gatherings and celebrations.
On Nov. 28, the City of Abilene is hosting its annual City Sidewalks holiday event, which includes a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony.
This year, attendees will also be introduced to a new Locomotive sculpture as part of the Storybook Sculpture Project.
At 4:30 p.m., those interested can visit Abilene City Hall, 555 Walnut St,. where a reception will take place before the official unveiling of the newest City sculpture.
The piece was inspired by 2014 Caldecott Medal winning book Locomotive, written by author Brian Floca and crafted by artist Steve Neves.
The book of inspiration was chosen by former City Council member Donna Albus, who wanted to connect Abilene's railway history to the City Hall building.
Additionally, Floca's work has been shown by the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, which Albus was inspired by, as well.
She worked alongside Abilene Cultural Affairs Council chamber vice president Lynn Barnett to help make this sculpture possible.
"There's a lot that goes into something like this and I would like to thank Lynn Barnett and her team for helping with Locomotive and for helping make Abilene a unique Texas destination for visitors using the Storybook Capital theme. It's a joy to see families enjoying the sculptures and celebrating art," Albus said.
Jack and Becky Rentz helped organize the sculpture details, as well, along with numerous donors.
Following refreshments, the piece will be revealed at 5:15 p.m. and the city Christmas Tree will be lit at 5:45 p.m. by mayor Weldon Hurt at the same location.
At 6:30 p.m., the annual FOX West Texas Christmas Lights Parade will take place for all to experience.
