ABILENE, Texas — For the past 50 years, Humanities Texas has worked to improve education quality, libraries and museums across the state.
This organization is marking its 50-year anniversary with a celebratory reception Oct. 24 at the Grace Museum in Abilene, 102 Cypress St.
"For five decades, Humanities Texas has worked with organizations in Abilene and throughout the state to conduct and support programs that advance the humanities and improve civic life," Humanities Texas Executive Director Eric Lupfer said. "We're excited to celebrate the history while also looking ahead for future opportunities and partnerships."
Since it first began, the organization has provided free history, government and English workshops to kindergarten through eighth grade students, utilized by 45 Abilene teachers.
Six Outstanding Teacher Awards have also been received by Abilene teachers over the past 30 years.
Additionally, Humanities Texas has supported the Abilene Public Library, Abilene Preservation League, The Grace Museum and the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature.
Abilene residents William P. Wright, Jr. and Jay Moore have served on the organization board in its time, again reiterating the community aspect of it all.
The upcoming reception will thus honor board members, grant recipients, scholars, officials and representatives who have supported Humanities Texas in and around Abilene since it first dawned.
