ABILENE, Texas — For its third semester in a row, Abilene Christian University is offering a unique scholarship for future military chaplains.

All chaplains -with an emphasis on those in the military-will have the chance to apply for a 50% or more tuition coverage scholarship based on recommendation letters, writing samples, GPA and more.

“Chaplaincy can deploy total fitness when providing and performing spiritual-emotional support, such as by applying musing or physical exercises,” second lieutenant and U.S. Army chaplain candidate and current student Jeremie Joseph said. “I want to serve the country and the community – men and women I am called to– through a well-rounded approach to fitness.”

Looking to the future, Joseph plans to graduate in 2026, where he will then continue to share his spirituality with servicemen and women across the country. He's not the only one.

Dr. Darryl Wesley graduated in 1988 while Captain David Bynum graduated in 1984. Both were Master of Divinity students who have gone on to work as master chaplains for the U.S. Navy.

“I’m incredibly thankful for the blessings of my education at Abilene Christian,” Bynum said. “Especially as I think about some of the great professors that I had, many of whom are now deceased, but who I carry with me every day.

Bynum graduated ACU with three degrees, where he then worked as a Navy Chaplain for 28 years total. His goal was to share God's word with the world around him.

Former Lubbock Christian University employee Dr. Wes Crawford is working with ACU in the hopes of attracting more students to the program with the chaplain scholarship.

“Theological education is changing all of the time,” Crawford said. “So we're trying to find new groups of folks that we can connect with. Because we had really good experience there and had some contacts, we reached out and made inroads in that community, and the applicants seem very excited about it.”

Chaplain students can use this scholarship to work towards a future in various career options.
