ABILENE, Texas — The City of Abilene is looking for all riders of motorcycles, trikes, scooters and other two/three-wheeled motorized transportation for a Ride to Work Day June 21.
At 11 a.m., everyone will meet at the Taylor County Expo Center, 1700 SH 36, and a group picture will be taken at 11:20 a.m., with stands up at 11:30 a.m.
There will be a group ride to Kent’s Harley Davidson, 3106 S. Clack St., where a free lunch will be served. For everyone’s safety, the ride will be escorted by the Abilene Police Department.
Ride to Work Day advocates and supports the use of motorcycles for transportation and provides awareness about sharing the road with the motto, “Look Twice, Save a Life.”
The first Ride to Work Day event was held July 22, 1992, and the event continued to grow as an informal grass roots demonstration every year until 2000. In 2000, the nonprofit organization, Ride to Work, was formed to help organize and promote Ride to Work Day.
In Abilene, this event has been held every year since 2012 (with the exception of 2020) with great participation of around 100 riders.
From Jan. 1, 2014-May 3, 2024, in Taylor County there were 709 motorcycle crashes with 786 injuries (44 of those were fatalities). In Jones County for the same period, there were 41 motorcycle crashes with 50 injuries (three of those were fatalities), according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
