Unattended cigarette causes fire at Abilene home

AFD says there was one person home at the time of the fire and they were able to get out safely.

ABILENE, Texas — The Abilene Fire Department says an unattended cigarette caused a fire at a home in the 3200 block of Highland Avenue early Friday.

At approximately 6 a.m. Friday, AFD crews responded to the fire to find smoke and flames showing from the back of the home. The crews made a quick attack and were able to stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the structure. The fire was contained to the home's back room.

AFD says there was one person home at the time of the fire and they were able to get out of the house.

Damages are estimated at $50,000. The fire was determined to be accidental, AFD said.
