SAN ANGELO, Texas — An arrest affidavit for the man accused in the stabbing death of a US Marine at a San Angelo bar has been released. The document provides new details about the deadly stabbing that happened over the weekend.
Out of respect for the Marine’s family, FOX West Texas will not identify him until official confirmation is received from Goodfellow Air Force Base.
The affidavit details the events that occurred Oct. 2 both inside and outside Whiskey River Saloon, 125 E. Concho Ave.
In the early morning hours of Oct. 2, San Angelo Police responded Whiskey River for a stabbing call. In the parking lot, broken glass and suspected blood spatter were present in various areas of the parking lot. An SAPD detective was told by an officer at the scene that multiple stabbing victims were triaged in the parking lot and taken by ambulance to Shannon Medical Center. He was also told one of the victims died from his injuries at the hospital.
The detective spoke to the bar manager, Joseph Selby, and the bar owner, Richard Hayslip, who accessed video from the bar’s cameras showing a large fight inside the bar between multiple groups of people, the affidavit states. A camera that covers the parking lot was accessed and showed another fight start in the parking lot.
The stabbing victim who died was seen getting into a vehicle before the fight started, then getting out of the vehicle. The victim with unknown people who were fighting, then walked beside a pickup truck, where he encountered the suspect.
Cellphone video showing the parking lot fight and the victim walking between the pickup truck and another vehicle, then disappear from the camera’s view. As the victim gets to the edge of the camera view, the suspect lowered his shoulders and makes a thrusting motion towards the victim. The man, identified as Ray Vera by witnesses, can be seen walking back from behind the truck with a knife in his hand.
The victim was seen walking away from the truck holding his chest.
Vera told police during an interview that he did not remember anything about the night because he was drinking alcohol. He told police he did not get in a fight and he did not stab anyone.
Vera has been charged with murder and his bond has been set at $1 million.
