SAN ANGELO, Texas — Forty dogs, including puppies, were removed from a property near San Angelo Tuesday, Nov. 10, by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

An ASPCA press release did not include the location of the operation. In an email, Alyssa Fleck from the ASPCA, said the organization will not be releasing the pet owners' names or more information regarding the location, to protect the privacy of the individuals involved.

The release from the ASCPA said it worked with Texas animal welfare organizations including the Humane Society of North Texas and the Tri-City Animal Shelter & Adoption Center to help with the care and placement of the dogs.

The dogs were transported to the groups in the Fort Worth-area for immediate care.

According to the release, the animals were found living in and on the property of an overcrowded mobile home in substandard conditions. The dogs had inadequate access to food and some were found to be suffering from medical issues that will require veterinary treatment.

The pet owners, realizing they could not provide proper care for the animals, agreed to voluntarily surrender them to the ASPCA, the release said.

“The ASPCA is pleased to be in a position where we have the expertise and resources to support pet owners in need and improve the lives of animals in communities across the country,” Kyle Held, director of investigations for the ASPCA, said in the release. “While some of these animals will require medical treatment and behavioral rehabilitation, we’re thankful for the Humane Society of North Texas and Tri-City Animal Shelter & Adoption Center for assisting us with this case and we’re thrilled to help prepare these dogs for the next chapter in their lives.”

More than 20 dogs removed from the property were relocated to the Humane Society of North Texas, for medical treatment and behavioral evaluations before being made available for adoption.

The rest of the dogs were temporarily transported to Tri-City Animal Shelter, to receive daily care and medical exams from ASPCA staff. The dogs being cared for at the Tri-City Animal Shelter will be relocated soon to the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville, N.C.

The ASPCA is partnering with Wings of Rescue to fly the dogs to North Carolina, where they will receive behavioral evaluations and additional care to prepare them for adoption.

The ASPCA deploys nationally to assist local authorities in animal cruelty and neglect cases including animal fighting, hoarding and puppy mills. It also provides local communities with resources including grant funding and training to effectively assist animals during cruelty and disaster situations.
