SAN ANGELO, Texas — Is the USSR being recreated in a "zombie empire?" Is Putin trying to bring his country back to what it once was?
These questions and more will be discussed at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at Angelo State University to kickoff the fall semester ASU History Lecture Series.
Award-winning author Dr. Alan Barenberg wrote "Gulag Town, Company Town: Forced Labor and Its Legacy in Vorkuta" and co-edited another book called "Rethinking the Gulag: Identities, Sources, Legacies."

Now, he is sharing his knowledge at the C.J. Davidson Conference Center as hosted by the Russian Enrichment Center at a free event.
The presentation, The Soviet Union 101: A Zombie Empire?". It will go into detail about the past and present of the USSR in order to teach attendees about the vastly diverse Russian culture.

The university hopes to teach more about Russian language and culture and this program is just the start.
