Bicycle rider killed in hit and run in Abilene; suspect arrested

ABILENE, Texas — At 10:39 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, Abilene police responded to a call of a bicycle rider hit by a vehicle in the 1600 block of South 14th Street in south Abilene.

When officers arrived, the found a 41-year-old unresponsive male lying on the shoulder on the north side of the street and the bike he was riding a short distance away on the road.

The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin notification has not been made.

According to an APD press release, the rider was traveling west on South 14th Street and struck by a vehicle that left the scene of the crash.

Police identified the vehicle by a piece that fell off during the crash. Officers discovered the vehicle and driver in a south Abilene neighborhood the same evening.

28-year-old Luciano Tapia of Abilene was arrested and charged with second degree felony accident involving death before being transported to Taylor County Jail.

This investigation is ongoing.
