Breakaway ropers compete in slack for the first time in San Angelo

The San Angelo Rodeo was founded in 1932. Breakaway ropers have not competed at the event until 2024.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Tuesday, breakaway ropers competed in two rounds of slack at the Foster Communications Coliseum.

2024 is the first year breakaway roping has been part of San Angelo Rodeo performances. Tuesday, ropers competed to qualify for the rodeo's PRCA performances.

Jaycie Davison, from Gonzales, sat next to fellow roper, Bailey Jay, after the pair finished both of their runs.

"I made a decent run on my first one... then came back and started a decent run and didn’t finish my job," Davison said. "I missed my calf, but we’ll come again.”

Davison and Jay watched the rest of the second round from the stands, hoping to qualify for the San Angelo Rodeo.

The rodeo will continue at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
