CALLAHAN COUNTY, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety said one of the drivers in a two-vehicle crash that killed three people and injured three early Sunday morning crash in Callahan County was intoxicated.
Preliminary investigation from DPS showed a passenger car, driven by James May, 19, of Baird, was traveling south on Peyton Street and had stopped at a stop sign at Peyton and West 3rd streets.
A pickup truck, driven by Ashlie Haynes, 35, of Clyde, was traveling west on West 3rd Street approaching Peyton Street.
DPS says May failed to yield the right of way to Haynes, driving south into the intersection of Peyton and West 3rd. Three passengers were ejected from May's car in the collision.
Justice of the Peace Steve Odom pronounced Layni Potter, 18; Madi Buchanan, 18; and a 16-year-old male, all of Baird, dead at the scene of the crash.
Mays was taken by ambulance to Hendrick Medical Center, where he was treated and released. One of May's passengers, Dakota Kitchens, 19, of Baird, was also taken to Hendrick, where she was listed in stable condition.
Haynes was treated at the scene.
A statement from DPS later Sunday said during the crash investigation, investigators discovered Haynes was intoxicated at the time of the crash. She was arrested for driving while intoxicated and consented to provide a breath test which showed a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit of 0.08.
Haynes was booked into the Callahan County Jail.
DPS said the crash is under investigation and additional charges could be filed based upon the analysis of the evidence and facts once the investigation is completed.
