Texas Rangers identify suspect in Christmas Day shooting in Coleman County

COLEMAN COUNTY, Texas — UPDATE (7:50 a.m. Dec. 27): The Texas Rangers have released the name of the man who was shot by law enforcement after displaying a firearm after a vehicle chase on Christmas Day in Coleman County.

Jose Martin Hernandez Jr., 43, of Midland, was taken by helicopter for emergency medical treatment after the incident. He was later pronounced dead, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS said Hernandez fled from Coleman County Sheriff's Office and Coleman Police Department officers who responded to a suspicious activity in southern Coleman County on Christmas Day.

Law enforcement say he displayed a firearm at officers when the pursuit ended on US Hwy 84, several miles north of Coleman.

The incident remains under investigation by Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers. 

ORIGINAL STORY: On Christmas Day, the Coleman County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by officers of the Coleman Police Department, engaged in a pursuit that originated from a call of suspicious activity in southern Coleman County, during which a firearm had been displayed. The suspect fled the scene and deputies pursued him "through the City of Coleman."

According to a Texas DPS press release, the suspect was stopped on US Hwy 84, several miles north of the Coleman city limit. Officers at the scene "discharged their weapons in response to a threat, striking the suspect," who was then transported by helicopter from the scene for emergency medical treatment.

This incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
