Suspect charges Coleman officer with sword, officer fires shot

The Texas Rangers are investigating the use of force incident. The man with the sword was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.

COLEMAN, Texas — The Texas Rangers said they are investigating a use of force incident that happened Sept. 21, 2022, involving a Coleman Police Department officer.

According to DPS and CPD, at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, a CPD officer responded to the intersection of West Mesquite and South Nueces in Coleman for a report of a man threatening people with a sword.

When the officer tried to make contact with the man, he threatened and then charged at the officer while holding the sword. The officer fired a shot and the suspect was injured.

The subject was identified as Santos Mendoza III, 50, of Coleman. He was taken to a local hospital for a minor injury and booked in to the Coleman County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

The Coleman Police officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure. The Texas Rangers investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available currently, the release said.
