COLEMAN, Texas — UPDATE: Coleman ISD Superintendent Brandon McDowell is crediting one of the district's students that "did exactly what we have taught our students to do" -  reporting a social media post related to the gun (brought to school by another student) to administration Thursday morning.

After report was made, McDowell said the quick actions of the district and law enforcement kept Coleman ISD students safe and secure.

The district was immediately placed lockdown and McDowell said the Coleman Police Department and Coleman County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene within minutes.

Once officers secured the weapon, the student was taken into custody.

"The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we teach our students that if they “see something, they should say something”, which is exactly what our student did. We are grateful to this fine student who reported the firearm and to the local law enforcement community who so quickly responded to assist us in ensuring the safety of our students," McDowell said.
