TOM GREEN COUNTY, Texas — A 23-year-old San Angelo man is dead and a 24-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter after an incident in Tom Green County late Sunday night.

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to the 1200 block of Vines Road at approximately 11:53 p.m. Sunday on a report of a stabbing victim.

They found the victim, as Layne Lubke, 23, in the backyard with a stab wound to the upper left chest area and a stab wound to the left side abdominal area.

24-year-old Shae Shepherd was attempting to apply direct pressure to the wounds. Lubke was taken by ambulance to Shannon Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation indicates Lubke and Shepherd spent Sunday afternoon together drinking at San Angelo bars. They were called back to Shepherd's home by his girlfriend who claimed she heard gunshots in the area and the sound of someone breaking into her home. After arriving at the home, Shepherd armed himself with a pocket knife and went to the rear of the hose, where he encountered Lubke coming from the other direction.

In the confusion of the moment and under the apparent influence of alcohol, the TGCSO said Shepherd stabbed Lubke, resulting in his death. Investigators did not find evidence of an intruder.

Shepherd was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center at 6:55 a.m. Monday.

The sheriff's office says the case is currently under investigation and asks anyone with information to contact its Criminal Investigation Division at 325-655-8111.
