PORTLAND, Maine — Many people have Thanksgiving traditions they stick to year after year.
But there are always some who like to try new things, like deep frying a turkey instead of cooking it in the oven for hours and hours.
NEWS CENTER Maine meteorologist Aaron Myler turned to local experts for safety tips and advice for this Thanksgiving edition of Myler Makes It.
Check out these videos to learn more about how to keep you and your home safe if deep fried turkey is on the menu.
Part 1: How much oil do you need?
Check out these useful tips so the oil won't overflow when you put the turkey in the oil to cook.
Part 2: How to safely prepare the propane tank
Aaron Myler and the fire marshal go through the next steps to safely hook up the propane tank, test for leaks, and recommend placement before heating up the cooking oil.
Part 3: How to safely get the turkey into and out of the deep fryer
Adding the turkey to the hot oil is perhaps the most dangerous step taken while frying a turkey. The fire marshal says it's critical to shut off the burner when you put the turkey into the oil fryer. Then you can turn the burner back on. Remember, it is extremely dangerous to put a frozen or partially frozen turkey into the fryer.
When you're ready to take the turkey out, turn off the burner before removing from the hot oil. Let as much oil drip off as possible. Let the oil cool fully before disposal.
