Driver loses control of pickup truck on wet roadway near Putnam

Wet road conditions caused the man to lose control of the truck, DPS says. One of his passengers was killed in the crash.

CALLAHAN COUNTY, Texas — A Michigan woman was killed Monday morning when the driver of the pickup she was riding in lost control, causing it to roll.

Initially, Texas DPS identified the woman as the driver of the vehicle. It has since corrected the information.

Texas DPS says Mark Anthony Smith Jr., 24, of Rotan, was traveling west on Interstate 20, near Putnam, when wet road conditions caused him to lose control of the pickup. The pickup left the roadway to the north and into a barrow ditch, then rolled over.

Tammy Sue Burks, 66, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was taken by ambulance to Hendrick Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. 

Smith and passenger Makayla Nicole Line, 21, of Rotan, were taken to Hendrick for treatment of injuries. Both were listed as being in stable condition at the time of the DPS release.
