SAN ANGELO, Texas — Wednesday, volunteers gathered at Goodfellow Air Force Base to bag cookies which had been donated during the annual Great Cookie Caper.
Elementary school students decorated small bags which servicemembers will receive when the cookies are distributed. By Wednesday morning, the drive had reached its goal of 20,000 cookies, and by noon it approached 23,000 - with more expected.
Organizers said they were impressed by how many cookies came from small batch donations.
"It's truly been a community effort," Alex Luning, caper chair, said. "Those few dozen have added up so much."
Luning, whose husband is stationed at the base, has moved several times since the start of her marriage. She said she hopes her children will remember San Angelo's support for the military, particularly after this year's event.
