GRAPE CREEK, Texas — On Jan. 23, Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a three-car collision at the intersection of US Hwy 87N and Farm-to-Market Road 2105.
In a Facebook post about the incident, the department said there had been more than 41 crashes resulting in injuries at the location within the last four years.
Another post on the same day, the department pleaded for public support for a highway overpass at the intersection. It also said the construction of an overpass at US Hwy 87N and FM 2288 in Grape Creek had significantly reduced the number of crashes.
“Our volunteer fire department is wanting to raise community awareness on this intersection,” Grape Creek VFD’s Public Information Officer Jose Rivera said. “(We want to) inform and educate drivers to be careful when coming through here. We also wanted to share statistics with public officials and let them know that the rate of crashes are increasing here.”
Rivera said GCVFD is automatically dispatched to the area when there is a crash involving an injury. He said the department focuses on shutting down the intersection to ensure the safety of law enforcement and EMS personnel.
Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) San Angelo Public Information Officer Karen Threlkeld said her organization plans to install a traffic signal with pedestrian crosswalks at the intersection in place of the caution lights currently at the location.
TXDOT estimates the project will cost $1.5M and plans to ask for bids from contractors by July 2026. TXDOT would then contract with the lowest bidder, Threlkeld said.
