How to stay safe during an active shooter situation

Being prepared and staying safe are priorities when there is an attack involving an active shooter.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Active shooter incidents are unpredictable and although no one wants to prepare for such a situation, it’s important to stay alert and safe. Shooters target populated areas with firearms with an attempt to kill or harm people.

The average response time for law enforcement to get to a scene involving an active shooting is three minutes. However, in a dangerous situation, there is a lot that can happen in three minutes. Seeking safety and getting away from the attacker quickly is important to protect yourself and others.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommend anyone in a situation of a shooter to “run”, “hide” and “fight”. In order to escape from the attacker, it’s important to evacuate from the setting. However, in situations where it’s impossible to evacuate, finding a safe space to hide is a priority.

The Texas Department of Public Safety offers a free training program on how to respond to mass attacks in public. Certified troopers teach these courses to business, churches and schools. The program teaches individuals how to avoid and defend themselves and peers.

“Everyone has the right to defend themselves, whether you're legally carrying a firearm or if you have to find something near in the room, it's a moment of survival,” DPS Sgt. Justin Baker said.

Baker suggests to always be familiar with your environment, look for an emergency exit and be aware of your surroundings.

The iWatchTexas app is available to report any suspicious activity.
