TYE, Texas — Two semi-trucks and a utility service truck were engulfed in flames after an early Friday morning crash on Interstate 20, the Tye Police Department said.
Five people, including an infant, were injured in the crash that happened at about 2:15 a.m. Friday. Two people are in critical condition with one airlifted to Dallas. Both people who are in critical condition sustained serious burns and trauma to their head and bodies, Tye PD Chief Chris Selander said in a media release.
A preliminary investigation shows one 18-wheeler was on the shoulder at the 277 westbound I-20 with a service truck changing one of its tires when the second 18-wheeler entered the shoulder, colliding with the first truck and slamming into the service truck.
The semi-truck that caused the crash was carrying a large K Beam for a bridge weighing 80,000 lbs., Selander said, that was thrown approximately 200 yards away from the crash site.
Selander said at 7:25 a.m., first responders were still at the scene of the crash and were told all parties involved will survive.
Law enforcement is checking to see if the driver fell asleep or if alcohol was involved.
