ABILENE, Texas — The Abilene Police Department's Traffic Division is investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon on East Hwy 80.
According to an APD press release, at approximately 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, officers were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash in the 2800 block of East Hwy 80.
A Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Gary Bradley, 30, of Roscoe, was traveling westbound. A 2020 Toyota Tundra and a 2014 Honda Odyssey were traveling eastbound. The Toyota was occupied by driver Gerry Slagle, 56, of Clyde; June Byrd, 58, of Abilene; and Isiah Leija, 16. The Honda was occupied by driver Melissa Alvarado, 38, and a 6-year-old passenger, both of Abilene.
The Ford was westbound and crossed both eastbound lanes, striking a south guardrail and traveled west along the guardrail, colliding with the Toyota. The collision caused the Toyota to move left (north), and it was struck by the Honda.
According to the release, the Ford continued west along the eastbound outside lane. It went into the grassy area on the south side of the roadway, rolled over (ejecting the driver who was not wearing a seat belt), and came to rest in a ditch.
The driver of the Ford and the Toyota passenger (Byrd) were transported to Hendrick Medical Center by ambulance and both later care-flighted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Bradley suffered severe head injuries; and Byrd suffered severe injury to her right arm. All other persons involved in this crash were transported to Hendrick for treatment of minor injuries by private vehicle.
Alcohol may be a factor in this crash, the release said. The investigation is ongoing.
