The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported that out of all the holidays, New Year’s Day is the highest for car thefts.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles states that almost 200,000 vehicles are burglarized, and 65,000 cars and trucks are stolen each year.; which could have some West Texans wondering what to do if their car is ever broken into and what steps to take next.
First, it is suggested you call your local police department and report the crime. Next, call your insurance company to see if you are covered. To find that out, it boils down to what contents in the car were taken.
“Things that could be stolen, things like an iPhone or jewelry or your wallet. First, I would recommend that every time you get out of your car that you take that stuff with you or you are going home for the night or you are just out shopping and if you can't’ you just keep it locked up,” Clayton Sogard, State Farm Insurance agent, said.
He also added it is not your auto insurance policy that would cover your taken items.
“Because, the theft of that stuff isn’t covered by your insurance that would be covered under if you own your own home under your homeowner's insurance or under renter's insurances. The only thing that would be covered under it would be repairs to fix your car like if someone breaks your window out to get in and try to steal from you,” he said.
If you have questions about your policy, it's best to contact your insurance company to see exactly what your policy covers.
