WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas — White Settlement Chief of Police Christopher Cook provided a heartwarming update to a case involving an 84-year-old woman who was being scammed out of $40,000.
According to police, the woman was seen depositing thousands of dollars into a Bitcoin machine at a Chevron gas station off of I-30 in White Settlement, Texas.
A good Samaritan, Mindy Jordan, approached the woman and could hear people on the phone with her, quickly realizing that this was likely a scam that targeted the older woman.
The woman reportedly had $44,000 in cash with her and she insisted that the people on the phone with her were from the bank.
Jordan then called the police as the woman appeared scared.
According to police, Sgt. James Stewart arrived to the scene and got on the phone with the alleged scammer, hounding them and at point calling him a moron.
Thankfully, Jordan and Stewart intervened at the right time, ultimately saving the woman thousands of dollars.
On Saturday, Chief Cook said Stewart presented the victim with a check for $23,900, which was recovered from the Bitcoin ATM after she deposited it.
Stewart even escorted the woman to Chase bank to re-deposit the money.
Cook made sure to shoutout Lt. Denise Callahan, who reportedly worked with Bitcoin in order to retrieve the money back for the victim.
White Settlement Police Department reminds everyone that banks and law enforcement will never demand money from you over the phone.
