San Angelo police chief candidate faces scrutiny after wife's email

Travis Griffith, a candidate for San Angelo police chief, faces scrutiny after his wife's email promoting early voting sparked controversy.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — As Election Day fast approaches, an unexpected turn of events brought police chief candidate Travis Griffith into the spotlight.

Earlier this week, an email circulated among members of a San Angelo school, sent by Griffith’s wife, urging others to participate in early voting and providing details on polling locations. While the email was intended to get members of the community involved, it instead stirred controversy.

In an exclusive interview, Griffith explained, “My wife’s intent was solely to inform people about the election and support me. However, in hindsight, there were aspects of the email that should have been handled differently. She made a mistake, but there was no ill will or intent of wrongdoing.”

He described the toll the situation has taken on their family, “it's been super, super hard on her.” said Griffith. “We have a brand new baby boy, he's four months old, so navigating all the things to include in campaigning and a brand new baby, and we have a 19-year-old daughter. So the whole family is really feeling this because she's been accused of this terrible thing, and really she's just out there, sending an email in support of her husband.”

Responding to criticisms about the involvement of family in political matters, Griffith expressed surprise at the situation. "Neither my wife nor I anticipated this becoming an issue. She abides by the rules and regulations of her profession, and this was genuinely meant as a supportive gesture."

Despite the challenges, Griffith reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in his campaign. He highlighted the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.

Regarding support from colleagues and friends, Griffith acknowledged a message of encouragement from Lt. Cimino but noted the absence of communication from Lt. Hernandez.

Looking ahead to the upcoming election, Griffith assured voters that his principles remain unchanged.

"I will continue to prioritize transparency and accountability. San Angelo has the opportunity to lead by example, and I am dedicated to making that a reality."
