SAN ANGELO, Texas — Raul Ruiz looks out of his art studio window to see his 1947 Dodge pickup truck, which makes him feel inspired while creating new pieces.
Ruiz has been creating bronzes, paintings and pencil sketches for 37 years and he is opening a new gallery from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in San Angelo Oct. 22.
"I plan to do workshops here with different instructors, I plan to do sculpting classes...it's going to be exciting," he said.
The influence of West Texas life is prevalent in Ruiz's pieces as the majority of his works feature sheep, horses, rams and other cattle reminiscent of his childhood memories.
Ruiz's father supported his artistic passions and even purchased his first sketchbook. He moved to San Angelo in the 1980s, owning various studios over time.
His new studio is at 418 S. Oakes St. for a more peaceful environment.
"The downtown, it's good but it's not for me," Ruiz said. "I wanted a quiet place where I could chill out and paint..."
The opening night will feature four unique artists: Charlie Bullock, Pam Bunch, Cathy Lubke and Mary Haan, along with some of Ruiz' pieces.
The artists are from Athens, Del Rio, Burkett and Abilene, but they will be in attendance for the evening.
Ruiz hopes to grow his studio and continue creating art for himself and for others.
"My best work is yet to come," he said.
All are welcome to the opening event to celebrate the artists and their works.
