Every year, the San Angelo Animal Shelter reports an influx of animal drop-offs at the shelter in the days immediately following Independence Day weekend. This presents a major problem for the shelter, especially at times like now when it's already at maximum capacity.
The shelter will be temporarily closed for intake from 6 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Tuesday, although Animal Services officers will be available to respond to after-hours calls if the animal is a threat to itself or others.
If you find stray animals during the weekend, there a several things you can do:
- Take the animal to a veterinarian to see if the animal has a microchip.
- Post information and a picture of the animal on helpmegethome.com.
- Temporarily house the animal in hopes of connecting with the owner through helpmegethome.com or other means
If you are looking to adopt a pet, please consider adopting from the animal shelter. You can view all pets available for adoption at cvpaws.org/pets.
According to a COSA press release, whether you adopt, foster, volunteer, advocate or donate, every bit of assistance makes a difference.
