SAN ANGELO, Texas — Mauricio Portillo, 22, pleaded guilty to murder, tampering with evidence and assault on a public servant in a Tom Green County court and will now serve time in prison.
Portillo received 10 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the murder, five years confinement for the tampering with physical evidence and five years confinement for the assault on a public servant.
On Feb. 25, 2021, Rey Robles Jr. was shot and killed by Portillo during a marijuana drug transaction.
According to a release 119th District Attorney's Office, witness statements said Robles pulled out a handgun, struck the person that was selling the drugs in a possible robbery attempt and threatened others that were in the apartment with his handgun.
Portillo, who was present in the apartment, pulled out his own handgun and shot and killed Robles.
After the shooting, Portillo and others at the scene switched firearms and Portillo fled.
After investigation by the San Angelo Police Department, Portillo was arrested for murder and tampering with evidence.
According to the press release, on the day he was arrested, Portillo assaulted a detention officer at the Tom Green County Jail.
"This sentence holds Portillo accountable for his actions while taking into account the circumstances of this case, and the fact that Portillo had no other criminal history," 119th Judicial District Attorney John Best said in the release. "I would like to thank the officers and detectives from the San Angelo Police Department and investigators from the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office for their diligence and hard work involved in investigating these offenses."
