SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Concho Valley is expecting a winter storm with a chance of snow. This will put a stop to any travel plans that people may have made.
San Angelo Airport Director Jeremy Valgardson said there's a plan in place to help clear off the runways.
"We have snow and ice control plan. The FAA requires us to have one. The snow and ice control plan in West Texas is leaf blowers," Valgardson said.
They use the lawn-care tool to blow any snow or ice off the runways.
There is another plan in place just in case the leaf blower is not enough to blow the accumulation of snow and ice.
"As soon as we get any type of accumulation out on the runway. We can get up to a half of inch," Valgardson said. "As soon as we get above that we'll close the runway until condition is approved."
The decision to close the runway will be a choice Valgardson will make the day of the winter storm. For the planes in the sky, a change in direction may be needed to avoid damages.
The Dallas airport plays a role if the San Angelo airport will remain open. If the conditions in Dallas are bad to fly, the regional planes that come from San Angelo to Dallas will be stopped until the weather clears up.
Until then, the airport is fully operating and running.
