All core academics for Central on Oakes students will move to CHS main campus

By relocating the academic programs from the Oakes campus to the main campus, the SAISD said it could save up to $1 million per year in operational costs.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — All core academic programs for Central High School on Oakes students are being moved to the CHS main campus, the San Angelo Independent School District  board of trustees voted Monday.

The board voted 6-0 in favor of SAISD administration's recommendation to relocate all core academic programs starting in August 2024.

Central High School on Oakes will still be owned by the district and used for athletics and physical education courses, as well as some of the SAISD's Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, such as welding. Renovations at the CHS main campus without a bond measure will be completed to add additional classroom spaces.

The move helps to support individual student learning by reducing lost instructional time when students travel between campuses during the school day. Over the last year and a half, the district says it examined trends relating to instructional time for the students at Oakes. On average, those students lost up to 15 minutes of instruction per class period each time they transitioned and commuted between campuses.

By relocating the academic programs to the main campus, the SAISD said it could save up to $1 million per year in operational costs, which would allow the district to better utilize the funds by reinvesting into more instructional resources and/or staff.
