Celebrate cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers with Fort Concho

SAN ANGELO, Texas — If you’re looking for family-friendly fun this month, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark has you covered. The free events are perfect for the history buffs and art lovers in your family.

The fort is celebrating National Cowboy Day in the Quartermaster Building with entertainment from the Concho Cowboy Company, programs and refreshments. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at 630 S. Oakes St.

Celebrations will also include a talk on the American Plains Artists Western Art Show, which includes about 75 paintings and sculptures for sale by artists from across the nation. All art will remain on display until the end of the show Sunday, August 4.

National Buffalo Soldier Day will be held the next afternoon, July 28. The program starts at 2 p.m. at the Buffalo Soldier Memorial, across the street from the fort. The event includes historical presentations from Sherley Spears, former president of the local NAACP chapter, and C.A. Maedgen of the West Texas Archaeology Society. Visitors can also see the fort’s Buffalo Soldier exhibit at Barracks 1 from 1-5 p.m.
