SAN ANGELO, Texas — The demolition project of a historic Angelo State University residence hall began Wednesday.
The Concho Hall or “Men’s High Rise” opened in 1968, and housed nearly 500 students per semester. Concho Hall housed its last Angelo State student in 2017, and it was determined the hall needed to be demolished.
The project is scheduled to be completed this fall and is estimated to cost approximately $5.6 million. Angelo State plans to use student housing fees to fund the project which will be carried out in several phases.
Phase 1 of the project is currently underway involving the removal of all scrap metal and other fixtures from the building’s interior.
Phase 2 of the project will involve demolition of the building’s exterior and is scheduled to be completed in August. Removal of the foundation, backfilling of the resulting hole, landscaping, lighting and other finishing touches are scheduled to complete the project in October.
Angelo State facilities services personnel will undertake basic protective measures during the exterior demolition process of Phase 2 which will include fencing, detouring traffic, protecting windows and air-intake units, particularly for the cafeteria next to Concho Hall.
Pending funding approval from the State Legislature, Angelo State plans to utilize the former Concho Hall site as a future research and innovation hub facility.
