SAN ANGELO, Texas — On the heels of recent traffic crashes believed to be 'influenced' by the sun's position, the San Angelo Police Department is offering tips for driving at sunrise and sunset.
"With the time change," a social media post from the department said. "Many of us are now commuting during times when the sun is rising and setting, creating challenging driving conditions."
To enhance safety on San Angelo roads, the department says it encourages everyone to keep the following tips in mind:
- Stay Aware: Always be mindful of the drivers around you and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- Drive Safely: If you're driving into the sun, please drive to the current conductions of the roadway. This can significantly improve your visibility and safety.
- Use Sunglasses and Sun Visors: Protect your eyes with sunglasses, and remember that your car's sun visor can be adjusted to block the sun's glare. You can pop it out and pull it from side to side for better coverage.
- Practice Defensive Driving: Stay alert and be aware of changing driving conditions. Anticipate the actions of others on the road.
Getting to work or home quickly is important, but it’s essential to slow down and adapt to the new conditions because your safety and the safety of others depend on it, the post said.
