San Angelo ISD: Recent nearby earthquakes cause structural damage at San Jacinto, students will move to Reagan temporarily

Both schools will have a delayed start date.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Jacinto Elementary School students and staff won't be kicking of their new school year at their home campus - the San Angelo ISD says recent earthquakes in the area caused structural damage to the school's main building.

Because of the damage to a load-bearing wall, which could compromise the integrity of the structure, San Jacinto kindergarten-fifth grade students and staff will be moved to Reagan Elementary School, the district said in an alert to San Jacinto parents. The move, the SAISD says, is temporary.

Both schools will have a delayed start to classes - Monday, Aug. 19. Transportation to Reagan will be provided for all students.

San Jacinto students and staff in Tiny Texans, Early Childhood Special Education and Pre-K are in safe buildings not connected to the damaged building on the campus. They will remain at San Jacinto.

The SAISD said it is working closely with structural engineers and emergency services to assess and address the situation.

San Jacinto Meet the Teacher for K-fifth grade is rescheduled for 5-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at Reagan. Drop-off and pick-up for San Jacinto students will be on the 16th Street side of campus and the school office will be at the main entrance off 16th Street.

Pre-K and ECSE is still at noon Wednesday, Aug. 14 at San Jacinto.

The district says it will provide parents, students and staff with updates as soon as possible.

Engineers and architects were expected to be at the SAISD school board meeting Monday morning to give a report to the board of trustees and district administration.
