San Angelo Police locate driver in fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian

Andrea Mendoza was wanted in connection with a vehicle/pedestrian crash on North Chadbourne Street that killed a 53-year-old man.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — UPDATE (5:50 p.m. Aug. 4): Mendoza has been located and taken into custody. Tom Green County Jail records show Mendoza was booked at 5:10 p.m. Her bond is set at $75,000.

ORIGINAL STORY: The San Angelo Police Department is asking for the public's help finding the driver of a fatal hit-and-run crash who ran away from the scene early Sunday.

An arrest warrant has been issued for 19-year-old Andrea Mendoza for collision involving death, a second-degree felony.

Just after midnight Sunday, SAPD dispatch received a call about the crash in the 3100 block of North Chadbourne Street involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Officers found a 53-year-old man in the street with substantial injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

At a media conference Sunday afternoon, SAPD Chief Travis Griffith said the man did not survive.

The suspect vehicle, a white 2000 Mercury Sable, was found abandoned in the same block, south of the scene of the crash.

"Andrea, if you're listening right now, or if you're watching this video, I ask that you turn yourself in. I know that this is a scary deal and you're 19-years-old. I ask that you turn yourself in. There's due process and there's a life past this," Griffith said, addressing Mendoza. "Unfortunately, we've lost a life of a San Angelo resident."

Anyone with information on Mendoza's whereabouts is asked to contact SAPD dispatch at 325-657-4315 or CrimeStoppers at 325-658-HELP. Anonymous tips can be made via CrimeStoppers, the P3 app or using the QR code below.

At the briefing, Griffith said Mendoza and a passenger ran from the scene. An accident reconstruction expert, who is an SAPD detective, was able to help develop information quickly.

He said the SAPD does know who the passenger is and that they are not being identified because criminal charges are not being sought against them.

The crash is being investigated by SAPD CID, SAPD Traffic, SAPD CSI and SAPD Drone Unit.
