Groundbreaking ceremony set for World War II Memorial to honor Concho Valley veterans

The ceremony will be Thursday morning on the Concho River, across from the McNease Convention Center.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A groundbreaking ceremony for a World War II Memorial is set for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 6 on Rio Concho Drive across from the McNease Convention Center.

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the event - a partnership between the San Angelo Area Foundation, the City of San Angelo and community donors - will mark the beginning of the project dedicated to honoring the brave Concho Valley men and women who served during World War II. It also recognizing the sacrifices made to secure freedom and peace for future generations, the SAAF said.

"A group of community volunteers and leaders have joined together to raise needed funds to construct a memorial with a statue to remember and honor the extraordinary contributions of our WWII Veterans. This Heroes on the Concho project will serve as a permanent reminder of the cost of freedom and the enduring spirit of those who fought for it,” committee chair, Dr. Taylor Kingman, said.

The ceremony will include World War II veterans and their caregivers, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11), community leaders, local government officials and other veteran representatives. The memorial is designed to be a place of remembrance, ensuring that the legacy of local World War II heroes is preserved for decades.

Fundraising efforts have started for the memorial project has started fundraising efforts and contributions will help the community pay tribute through a permanent memorial featuring a 6-foot bronze statue of a World War II airman with inscriptions of the names of World War II veterans from the Concho Valley.
