SAN ANGELO, Texas — After running from San Angelo Police Department officers during a traffic stop on the city's south side, a 19-year-old San Angelo man was arrested and charged with multiple offenses.

An SAPD Anti-Crime Unit officer saw Ivan Lopez driving a white Dodge Charger near the River Ranch Apartments. Officers knew Lopez had active arrest warrants and conducted a traffic stop in the 1700 block of Knickerbocker Road.

Lopez was seen getting out of the vehicle to run away from officers. They followed him and saw him throw an unknown item over a fence in the 3600 block of South Jackson Street. Lopez caught and arrested a short distance later.

The SAPD said officers searched the area and learned the item Lopez threw over the fence was a handgun that was reported stolen. They also found out the handgun was modified/capable of automatic fire.

Lopez was also in possession of a small amount of marijuana and suspected THC vape pens. He was charged with multiple county warrants; possession of marijuana <2 oz.; evading arrest/detention on foot; and unlawful carry of a weapon.

The SAPD said more charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
