SAN ANGELO, Texas — After many months of detouring driving and walking routes, the Oakes Street Bridge is now reopened to all traffic.
In June 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Bridge Division began repair work on the bridge. On Thursday, the agency announced the completion of the work and its reopening.
TxDOT covered 90% of the $1.2M cost, with the City of San Angelo matching the remaining 10%, according to TxDOT San Angelo.
The Oakes Street Bridge is owned by the City, who worked with the TxDOT Bridge Division and utilized its statewide bridge repair program for the necessary repairs.
Built in 1930, the bridge a continuous variable depth concrete t-beam bridge on concrete bents and is of historical value to San Angelo. The project was part of TxDOT's Bridge Maintenance & Improvement Program, a federally-funded program allowing local governments to apply for funding from the State of Texas.
Surface work included deck preservation and reconstruction of the approaches on either side of the bridge. On the underside of the bridge, work included concrete repairs and painting.
