SAN ANGELO, Texas — United States Marine Corps Sgt. Bryce Rudisell was 27-years old when he was stabbed in the parking lot of Whiskey River Saloon in San Angelo.
The Goodfellow Air Force Base Marine died from his injuries Oct. 2, 2022.
More than a year later, Rudisell is being honored with the first ever Run for Rudi meant to carry out his namesake for years to come.
"From the very beginning of getting to know him and seeing him instruct and lead and mentor, you were immediately struck with his passion...," Goodfellow AFB Lt. Col. Thomas Coyle said.
Rudisell first joined the Marine Corps Detachment in 2019. He became familiar with Coyle in June 2022 and he was especially close with his fellow firefighters.
According to Coyle, Rudisell was often known for challenging his peers to be the best versions of themselves.
The memorial race will be a testament to that passion, with options to participate in a one mile, 5K or 10K run at 8 a.m. Oct. 21.
The run will take place at San Angelo State Park, FM 2288 "and it's gonna be tough...it's gonna be off road, hilly," Coyle said.
Some parts of the trail will become narrow and Coyle advises the run isn't meant to be easy.
Following Rudisell's death, members of the Marine Corps were inspired to keep his name alive. This race is just one way of doing that.
So far, approximately 200 participants have registered for the event and sign-ups end Oct. 20.
"To reach that humble goal already we're pretty happy about," Coyle said.
Going forward, the Marines hope to continue honoring Rudisell, whether with a race or other form of physical fitness challenge.
Coyle also remarked on the Marine Corps slogan, Semper Fidelis, which translates from Latin to mean "always faithful."
"In the end, it's really about remembering about Bryce Rudisell and saying his name," Coyle said.
