SAN ANGELO, Texas — It's almost time for the Elks Lodge Home Away from Home event and the Elks need your help this year.

For more than a decade, the San Angelo community has held the event for service men and women stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base who can’t be home with their families on Christmas Day. This is the ninth year the San Angelo Elks will host the event.

Most of the young military members have recently joined the military and are still adapting to a new way of life, and this will be their first time away from home for the Christmas holiday.

This year, grant funding for Home Away from Home have been reduced and the Elks are looking for businesses that would like to help sponsor the event.

The public can help by donating gift cards (minimum $25) or other new items that can be used as appropriate gender-neutral gifts for the servicemembers in attendance. Cash is always acceptable and will be used to purchase additional gifts.

For the bakers out there, desserts are welcome donations and can be dropped off from 5-7 p.m. Dec. 24 at 2121 S. Chadbourne St., or before 11 a.m. Christmas Day.

To donate or sponsor, call 325-227-6920.
