SAN ANGELO, Texas — U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced Wednesday that the City of San Angelo has been awarded a $30,979 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The funds are from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) Program to address the need for traffic enforcement equipment and body cameras, which help in criminal investigations. Cornyn's office said the senator has long supported the grant program and urged the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies to fully fund it during the appropriations process.

“The Byrne JAG Program is the primary federal source of criminal justice funding for state and local governments and helps law enforcement agencies make Texas communities safer,” Cornyn said in the release. “This funding will empower law enforcement to target public safety needs specific to their communities, address criminal threats, and reduce crime rates in cities like San Angelo.”

We've reached out to the City and the San Angelo Police Department to ask how the funds will be dispersed.
