SAN ANGELO, Texas — Do you want to serve your community and fight crime? The San Angelo Police Department needs police officers.

SAPD Chief Travis Griffith says the department is operating at a 20% deficit in manpower and is looking to hire more officers to fill that gap.

According to the department's website, the SAPD handles an average of 100,130 calls from citizens for police service annually.

Starting pay for recruits is $54,400.

To get the process started, complete this application for employment with the City of San Angelo.

Then complete these requirements:

  • Written civil service exam (applicants must pass with a score of at least 70% to proceed to the next step)
  • Physical agility test (see Recruiting-Testing Dates for more information)
  • Detailed personal history statement
  • Background investigation to include polygraph examination
  • Oral interview board
  • Psychological examination
  • Medical examination

Candidates are selected from a field of applicants who have passed the civil service exam, physical agility test, a thorough background check and intense oral interview. Then, if they pass all of these, applicants will be hired as police recruits and attend a rigorous and demanding six-month basic peace officer course (police academy). After graduating from the academy and passing a state certification exam, trainees will become probationary police officers.

To apply, call the City of San Angelo Human Resources Office at 325-657-4221; pick up an application from Human Resources at 1 City Hall Plaza; or click here for an application.
