Registration for San Angelo Rodeo mutton bustin' is open

Children who are 4 and older and weigh less than 50 lbs. are eligible to participate in the event. The drawing for performance slots is Feb. 21 on Facebook Live.

SAN ANGELO, Texas — If you have a child who is at least 4, weighs less than 50 lbs. and wants to be in the rodeo, sign them up for mutton bustin' at the 2024 San Angelo Rodeo. 

Registration for mutton bustin' is now open and ends at noon Feb. 16. 

This year, the drawing for performance slots at the rodeo, which runs April 5-21, will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 21, on Facebook Live.

If your child is selected, parents will be notified by email and have until 5 p.m. March 1 to pay the $35 entry fee to secure the spot in the rodeo performance drawn. Anyone who does not respond and pay the fee by March 1 will lose the performance spot, which will be assigned during the drawing. 

"We will start with the first performance and go straight down the list of time slots. There will be no trades. If a contestant is not able to compete at their appointed time slot, that spot will be filled from an alternate list. Entry fees are non-refundable," the SASSRA said on its website.

Before signing your child up, here are the Rodeo's rules: 

  • Contestant must be 50 pounds or less at time of the performance. They will be weighed on-site before competing.
  • Contestants must be at least four-years-old
  • Safety equipment will be provided by SASSRA
  • No ropes or any other equipment are allowed
  • Contestant must ride facing forward
  • Check-in time is one hour before the performance starts at the Foster Communications Coliseum box office.

The winner of each performance will receive a belt buckle from Sonora Bank.
